Xuefei Yang, the Chinese celebrity guitarist

It was a beautiful Saturday morning as I watched CCTV. A programme it calls ICON came up and was greeted by an inspiring interview with a musical genius named Xuefei Yang. She sounded inspiring and played awesomely, I soon fell in love with every bit of the programme. It led me to Xuefei Yang’s official website, www.xuefeiyang.com, where I found more information about her. This ICON show on CCTV truly made my day. Xuefei’s story started from childhood when she began learning to play the guitar, an instrument she describes as western and therefore alien to the Chinese music culture. She had her first public performance at age 10.

Her website had this to say…

“Born in Beijing, now based in the UK, Xuefei Yang (Fei) is acclaimed as one of the world’s finest classical guitarists. Born following the Cultural Revolution, an era where Western music & instruments were banned, the fascinating story of Fei’s rise to the world stage, is that of a musical pioneer. She was the first ever guitarist in China to enter a music school, and became the first to launch an international professional career. Prodigious musical talent was evident at all stages. Her first public appearance at the age of ten, at the China International Guitar Festival, received such acclaim that the Spanish Ambassador in China immediately presented her with a concert guitar. The composer Rodrigo attended her debut concert in Madrid when she was fourteen and in 1995, when John Williams came to Beijing, he was so impressed with her playing that he gave two of his own Smallman guitars to her Conservatory especially for Fei and other top students to play.”
Following this interview, I find these points quite resonating...

One, it is necessary to encourage and give all needed support to the younger ones to pursue their individual interests. An interest may form a small or bigger part of their life endeavors later on. Support and provide the needed guidance to be at their best. Everyone knows that children always want to play but do we also consider how they play or what kind of play they love? Or don’t care but only expect them to be playful all day. I think when they are still young, they start showing one interest or the other as they get exposed to their young world.

Two, some interests don’t look common or popular but turn to have great impacts later in life. It’s a mystery and there is need to be a little more open and less opinionated in order not to cut them off their likely destinies in life. Xuefei Yang has become a musical pioneer bringing lots of musical entertainment to a global audience. It took the role being played by the parents to both notice and provide all the needed support. If there was one legacy you can bequeath your younger ones, it is that which they would be fulfilled with.

Three, Xuefei Yang was informed by something in her to start work on fusing her local folk music compositions with her mastered western originated musical instrument producing a fusion that’s earning her both local and international recognition today. Lesson: There is no need entertaining unfounded fears for losing someone who shows an interest that seems unexpected or strange. People fear that one is about to get lost to one foreign influence or the other. However, such interests if pursued, could serve as some bridge whose application would be discovered only at a future time for generations to come. The best you can do is to pray that God would perfect His will in their lives.

In conclusion

While it is necessary to encourage our younger ones to find fulfillment in life and back them up to follow their passions and interests, it is also important to ensure they are properly guided towards achieving their heights in life.

The featured personality (Xuefei Yang) may seem rare but such was supposed to be our individual stories since each of us is uniquely special to the world.

The Bible puts it this way in Romans 8:19,

"The whole world is waiting for the time when the sons of God will be seen.”

No human being that God has blessed through His son Jesus Christ is insignificant to his generation. There is an issue you are built to address. A problem you are equipped to solve. And a desire you are designed to fulfill.

Even Jesus Christ had passions and interests while he was growing up. As a young boy at the age of 12, he demonstrated great passion for the knowledge of God’s word as reported in Luke 2:41-47,

“Every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover Feast a special time to thank God. When Jesus was twelve years old, they went to Jerusalem for the feast as they always did. After the days of the feast were finished, they started home. But the boy Jesus stayed in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it. They thought he was coming with the rest of the people. They travelled one day. Then they looked for him among their family and friends. But they did not find him. So they went back to Jerusalem and looked for him. On the third day they found him in the temple. He was sitting in front of the teachers of the law. He was listening to them and asking them questions. All who heard him were surprised at what he knew and his answers.”

This shows the importance of parental guidance to ensure that cherished values are adequately maintained. Such values could be cultural, religious, social, educational and so on...and they combine to ensure that the younger ones grow to find their purpose in life.
